Matthew Reilly a.k.a "Matty" was born and raised in Sydney, Australia. Originally having aspirations be be a lawyer he studyed law at the University of New South Wales.
In 1994 whilst still at university he wrote his first book, Contest. Matthew pitched Contest to every major publishing house in Sydney but it was rejected by every single one of them. Having faith in his own abilities he borrowed money from his family and self published 1000 copies of Contest.
Reilly approached a book store in Sydney and asked if he could put a few copies of Contest onto their shelves, luckily they agreed and not long after they had sold all the copies and were ringing Matthew for more!
One of these original copies was purchased and read by Cate Patterson a commissioning editor for Pan MacMillan, she signed Matthew up to write Ice Station and Matthew Reilly Published Author was born.
In the next 15 years Matthew Reilly was to write seven more novels and one novella (short story). Two huge characters were invented, Captain Shane "Scarecrow" Schofield star of Ice Station, Area 7, Hell Island and of course Scarecrow and his latest hero Jack West Jr whose adventures you can read about in The Seven Ancient Wonders and The Six Sacred Stones.
